About Us

Our team leaders are the best in their fields

We are a Sub-Acute Hospital licensed with department of Health and Board of Healthcare Funders.

Our facility is inspected annually by KZN Department of Health. Our practice number enables us to obtain authorisation for admission from your medical aid. We have a Case Manager who will send regular clinical updates to the medical aids and ensure accurate billing of your account.

We deliver comprehensive and cost effective inpatient care for patients who suffered  an acute event as a result of an illness, injury or disease; have a determined course of treatment and who do not require intensive diagnostic and or invasive procedures.

Our aim is to help the patient recover and enable them to live and work normal as soon as possible; regain independence and get them home as soon as possible.

Julie Welsh

"I did my nursing training at Greys Hospital. Once qualified I moved to Johannesburg and worked at Morningside Mediclinic. Thereafter, I moved to Cape Town and worked at Constantiaberg Mediclinic and then Newlands surgical clinic. I have now lived in Newcastle for 18 years and have always had a deep passion to care for people. My passion stems from assisting my mother in her clinic on our family farm during my childhood. My dream was to open a stepdown facility to assist people in need of care. It has been exhilarating to open Hilldrop Health Care Centre and I am looking forward to what the future holds."

Riana Hellerle

"I qualified as a Professional Nurse / Midwife in 1988 from HF Verwoerd Hospital / SG Lourens College in Pretoria. I got married and moved to Newcastle in 1989. During my 35 year career I have worked at an Old Age Home, and worked as a phlebotomist at a well known pathology laboratory. For the last 19 years I worked at Mediclinic Newcastle in various departments. I have done case management for 8 years, qualified as a theatre scrub sister, and scrubbed for all disciplines for 4 years. The last 7 years I nursed in ICU and qualified as an ICU nurse during the COVID pandemic. I am a qualified CPR instructor and breastfeeding consultant. This is the reason I absolutely love nursing as it opens up so many doors. I am now so happy to be Case Manager at Hilldrop Healthcare Centre and part of a great team with the aim of making each patient's stay a wonderful experience."

Mariaan Olivier

"I am a qualified Professional Nurse, I did my training at NCOFS in Bloemfontein. I have worked at various hospitals, including almost 20 years at Mediclinic Newcastle. I have experience in medical, surgical, and ICU nursing and a passion for infection control and palliative care. My life and nursing motto is: Bloom where you are planted and let others bloom!"

Gugu Mtshali

"I obtained my Nursing diploma from Ekukhanyeni Nursing School in 2014. I have worked at Life Springs Parkland Hospital in Johannesburg and at Ladysmith Lenmed Laverna Hospital. I have worked in the Medical, Surgical, Pediatrics, and COVID-19 units. I then went on to join the amazing Hilldrop Healthcare Centre family. I strongly believe that Nursing is my calling because the ability to say I contributed to someone's wellbeing and healing gives me the utmost satisfaction."

Amanda van Jaarsveld

"I obtained my diploma in 1986 through Ann Latsky Nursing College, practicing my student years in Standerton Hospital. I have been a Staff Nurse for over 35 years, I am experienced in many different medical disciplines. I mostly enjoy Cardio thoracic units, Cath Lab, Geriatrics and advanced and specialised wound care. Respectively, I held several other positions, having my own wound care facility for 9 years and trained as a wound care consultant in Dijon France, at URGO Medical, through Equity Medical SA. My primary passion is taking care of people's needs, caring and comforting the weak and vulnerable which I believe any long term nurse has been called for. I boast in my heavenly Father's gift to use me as an instrument in His divine power and therefore, I joined the family of the fast growing and caring facility - Hilldrop Healthcare Centre, Newcastle KwaZulu-Natal.
